November 22, 2022
If you’re not quite ready for Christmas movies, there are also some fantastic Thanksgiving classics, both old and relatively new.
Whether you’re streaming away as you plot out your family’s feast or decompressing after gobbling up that extra slice of pumpkin pie, know there’s a film you can stream to tickle your turkey day fancy!
From animated films for kids (and the young at heart) to touching melodramas to zany comedies, we’ve got your pre-feast movie binge and post-feast collapse covered!
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
First, check out A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving to help keep the kids occupied while you complete your Thanksgiving preparations. Apple TV+ features this family classic with all your favorite Peanuts characters, from Linus to Peppermint Patty.
Garfield’s Thanksgiving
Next, imagine the hijinks that ensue after Garfield, America’s beloved lasagna-loving feline, is forced to go on a diet during the greatest feast of the year. Garfield’s Thanksgiving streams on Prime Video and might help inspire you to count your calories after the holidays are over!
Jim Henson’s Turkey Hollow
Another more recently-produced family favorite is Jim Henson’s Turkey Hollow. Starring Mary Steenburgen and narrated by Ludacris, Turkey Hollow is based on master puppeteer and storyteller Jim Henson’s unfinished works. Magic and mayhem abound in Turkey Hollow, so check it out on Prime Video.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
For the grown-ups in the family, you can’t beat the raucously funny Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
Steve Martin and John Candy star in this classic 1980s comedy about two travelers trying desperately to make it home for Thanksgiving. We can’t help but love watching these comedy legends at the top of their game. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is currently streaming on Paramount+.
Hannah and Her Sisters
The most critically acclaimed film on our list is Hannah and Her Sisters, Woody Allen’s Academy Award-winning comedy-drama set over three successive Thanksgivings.
Hannah features Allen’s signature wit and screenwriting excellence and brilliant performances by Dianne Wiest and Michael Caine, both of whom took home Oscars. Hannah and Her Sisters also stars Barbara Hershey, Mia Farrow, and Carrie Fisher. You can rent it on Apple TV+.
What’s Cooking?
If you’re looking for a Thanksgiving-themed comedy that also takes on typical family issues and even some melodrama, check out What’s Cooking?, which streams free on Tubi. Starring Mercedes Ruehl and Kyra Sedgwick, What’s Cooking? might be just the thing that makes your own family seem relatively sane!
The Oath
Families fighting about current events and politics over Thanksgiving dinner have never been funnier! The Oath, which stars Ike Barinholtz, Tiffany Haddish, and John Cho, is a Thanksgiving-based satire that pokes fun at just about everyone and says a lot about today’s political discourse—but in a hilarious, entertaining, and even thought-provoking way. You can stream The Oath on Kanopy.
